Re: volunteering
Sat, March 19, 2005 - 7:55 AMI was in Ethiopia/Eritrea 72-74 with my then wife. We had a wonderful experience living in two different regions of the country. When we left, we traveled through East Africa, then to London, then home. Peace Corps paid us a local salary while we were there (i.e., we earned what our fellow Ethiopian teachers earned), and a "readjustment allowance" in USD when we got home. I believe the allowance is now about $6500.
Your experience will depend in large part on what your job is, where you're posted, what your living situation is, and whether you're a single female living in a male-dominated region ALONE. Single women would be advised to ask to be posted to a town with another single woman, so you will at least have some company. Often, traditional societies don't know how to treat single women; married women don't trust them around their husbands, single men hit on them, etc.
Where do you hope to live, and what do you hope to do?
