Slow!

This is a slow forum, isn't it? Well, there are 11 of us now - who are you all, where did you serve? What program? What're you up to now?

I served as a Math teacher in Guinea (West Africa) from 97-99. Now I've got a small business, a healing practice, and I'm doing some temp work to make up for the shortfall.

Okay - Discuss! :)

    Hi all,
I was in The Gambia (W. Africa) from 2000-2002. I was an environment vol. mostly working with agro-forestry, starting tree nurseries, teaching ag-fo, and advocating against bush fires. (Hey Nathan, visited Guinea during my second year. Beautiful country, where exactly did you serve?)
Now, I'm working in water conservation. I like the work but it's taking up way too much of my life and I have so little time to just BE. Am planning a trip to India & Nepal for next year where I just might stay awhile.

I served in the Forest region, between Macenta and N'Zerekore, in a town called Seredou. Did you make it down there? My site had a reputation for being one of the most beautiful in the country - I've uploaded one picture to the photo album, and there are more in my profile; feel free to take a look.

Did you ever make it down to my neck of the woods? After I left there was a lot of civil unrest in that area, so they evacuated all the volunteers. What was the situation while you were visiting?

I spent most of my time in Douki hiking about. Camped out in a large cave one night and got to be spectator to an amazing lightning storm. Didn't get down as far south as you were. Just didn't have enough vacation time left. Volunteers were back in that area during my time over there.
Also had my first experience on one of those crank & pulley ferry boats in Guinea.
Did you travel around much to the rest of W. Africa?

No, I kept it pretty much to Guinea, aside from 10 weeks of training in Senegal, and an overnight in Casablanca after COS. I liked the idea of getting to know the country I was serving in, and always being able to say, "I live here, I work here, I am here for your children" - that kind of thing.

But I do plan on going back for a visit sometime soon, and I think I will make the rounds. Any recommendations?

Well, my Guinea trip was only a week and a half. That's not much of a dent in a 27 month period. And I guess part of the experience for me, in addition to being immersed in the culture that I lived in was seeing how other nearby countries compared. I was living w/ Fula's so it was esp. interesting to see see the differences/similarities of the Fula's in Guinea.

My village was only 1k from Senegal and the border cultures of Sene. and Gambia vary little. Thus, I found myself working with villages in both countries because the border was for all intents and purposes invisible.

If you visit Gambia I would suggest finding a bike a just touring the country from end to end. It's the best way to see the country and be able to hit the best river spots and hidden villages. In Senegal, two favorites were ToubabDialao, a coastal village north of Mbour with red cliffs and a fairly secluded beach and St. Louis, a town of stark contrasts and colors w/ the pastels of French colonial buildings and the rusted corrugate shacks along the penninsula, alongside the fisherman's graveyard w/ all the paraphernalia of a life at sea-- nets, hulls, boat flag, etc. I didn't get to Mali, but several of my friends have said that the Dogon country (with living spaces built into the cliffs) is one not to miss.
