topic posted Wed, September 17, 2003 - 2:05 PM by  Jake
I'm not a returned volunteer- infact i'm still in the aplicationa process (whicich as you know is a task in it's self) yesterday - i got my dental evaluation. it seems like this whole thing is gonna take forever! the program i'm signed up for - is scheduled to leave at the end of Feb.

So here's where you guys come in: Am i going nutz? Does it ALWAYS take this LONG!? i know patience is probably the most important virtue for someone in my position, but i JUST WANT TO GO!!!

where did you guys volunteer?
did you learn a language before you went?

please tell me any other info you think may help!

thanks a lot....

that will depend on where you're going. I was in Namibia, 1993-1995, the official language was english, and I taught in english. The dominant local language was called RuKwangali, but there was also RuSambyu, RuGcriku, and Thimbukushu in my region. My students (more or less) spoke english and they wanted me to speak english with them, so I never got too good at Kwangali. I tried, had a language tutor, but it was pretty hard.

application process for me took about 10 months. keep on top of it. Peace Corps Washington will almost surely lose some of your important papers.
  • I have a few questions also...

I wan't to go to the peace corp the lady I talked to said because I don't have very much experience or education I should go to college and take a 2 years certificate course like registered nurse or something and then do the application process but I was wondering if I can do the application before I graduate the course like my last year and if they will still except me?

My process was 11months for approval, 5 weeks from invitation to departure. I served in Haiti, and for me, learning Haitian Kreyol was a 10 week, in country course. They can teach the basics, but you'll only get it by interacting AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE with your family, host country friends and community.

Don't worry, it will all work out, and the frustrations now will be something to talk about with your fellow volunteers when you arrive.

Yes, that's fine. Many people start the process long before they've graduated. I applied in March and graduated in June, and left in July. As long as you're on track, it shouldn't be a problem.
